Deleted my post on the Kony2012 video because I did some research and well, now that I actually know stuff, I really don’t want to be promoting Invisible Children or Kony2012. I do however think that the situation in Uganda is important and should not be ignored. I wrote a super long post about this that I put on facebook and I don’t feel like writing another one here in tumblr so I’m just going to copy and paste, if you don’t mind. 8’D
KONY2012…Please read?
So I’ve been hearing about Kony2012 and Invisible Children Inc. and at first the whole thing seemed so wonderful! I saw the video myself yesterday and like the majority of the people who saw it, bawled my eyes out and proceeded to spread it on the internet.
However, while I was doing so, I noticed there were some people crying foul on Invisible Children Inc. and well, that made me a little bit concerned. Today I’ve spent a couple hours or so checking out the internet to find more information about this group and its cause, so my opinion on this thing should not be taken as solid facts, seeing as I haven’t done a large extensive research on this.
Yes, Kony is an evil bastard and should be arrested as soon as possible. No, Invisible Children are not the saints they make themselves out to be. Apparently around 20-30% of the money the group makes actually goes to their programs in Uganda. The other 70-80%? I haven’t the slightest clue, but I know that such a large percentage for something other than you know, the cause they say they are devoted towards, is not right. I am sure there are plenty of other issues, but that’s the biggest one that bothers me right now.
It is great that because of Invisible Children has made so many people aware of Kony, in my opinion, a group with this much controversy around it is not trustworthy and I would advise not giving a single cent to them. Most of the people who are spreading Kony2012 are going off the video they have seen, which while being very well made and very moving, doesn’t give all the facts (neither does website it tells you to go to, kony2012.com). So please, before you throw yourself headfirst into this cause, do some research first and form your own opinion.
Of course, I’m not saying do absolutely nothing about what’s going on in Uganda. Just find a different, credible charity to give your money to and spread awareness about. One that actually gives the money it receives to its cause and one that you have researched about.
In conclusion,
This is my opinion. You can agree with it, you can disagree with it. In fact, please comment below if you want to share your own opinion and what not.
Just don’t make the same mistake as me and support a cause blindly. Inform yourself! c:
